Great Expectation Novel Review

Great Expectations involves a story of a boy named Pip that lived together with his sister and Joe which was her sister’s husband. On Christmas Eve, he met a convict that asked him for food and a file . Then, he also visited the wealthy Miss Havisham and Estella. Estella treated him so poorly but it made him have a goal to be a gentleman. One day, he got a large fortune from the unknown benefactor to be a gentleman. He went to London and got lessons there until he knew that his unknown benefactor was his convict. Miss Havisham that was suspected as his benefactor was actually evil and she also made Estella to be mean and cold hearted. Everything that happened was really out of his expectation. In the end, Pip forgave Estella and they lived together for the rest of their life.

In the story, there are some symbols to support the story. Firstly, the cold breeze that symbolized frightening and gripping situation when Pip met the victim. Secondly, mist that represented the condition of obscurity. Then, the shadows that reminded us of the truths that are hidden and everything can happen far than the way we expected before. On the other hand, Miss Havisham’s messed garden also symbolized her ruined life because of her cancelled wedding. Furthermore, Miss Havisham’s rotting bridal cake and her yellowed wedding dress are symbolic of the wasted life of a once beautiful woman who was abandoned by her fiancee on her wedding day. Lastly, the Satis House which was an irony that made the reader perceive an unhappy and ungrateful life.

Great Expectations has a definite strengths in the story that keep building up the readers’ curiosity in every chapter .Great expectations also has a unique and different story from the others. The story also teaches us some lessons to learn.

Unfortunately, this book also has weaknesses such as the changing of the plot is too unrealistic and nonsense. On the other hand, the story is also too dramatic to be real and happen in our life.

This book teaches us that good deeds will come back to benefit you, just like Pip, When Pip helped the convict, he got a benefit from it because the convict made him to be a gentleman. Besides, it also told us that money can’t bring happiness, the only thing that can makes us happy is a loving relationship with our family.

I would like to recommend this book to my relatives since it has such moral lessons that we need in our life. And also I would like to recommend this book to my brother so he can learn to be helpful to others.
